What we love about this recipe

  1. Takes less than 10 minutes.
  2. It is a delicious take on Mango lassi, and it is loaded with the goodness of banana, a good potassium source.
  3. It is a perfect breakfast smoothie and also makes for a great after-school snack.
  4. No added sugar – it’s sweetened by honey.
  5. When mangoes are not in season, you can substitute them with frozen mangoes.

Ingredient notes/swaps

  • Mango chunks or pieces– ripe mangoes are the sweetest. Pick a non-fibrous variety such as AtaulfoKent, or Keitt. If you are in India, Alphonso or Kesar are great options. When mangoes are not in season, feel free to use frozen mango pieces or unsweetened pulp.
  • Bananas, chopped – pick ripe bananas that are firm and not overly ripe. You can use previously frozen bananas, too – these are perfect for smoothie bowls as the frozen bananas make this smoothie thick and creamy.
  • Milk – While I prefer to use whole milk, you can also try other non-dairy options such as oat milk, almond milk, coconut milk, coconut water, etc.
  • Sweeteners – I’ve used honey, but you can substitute it with maple syrup or agave syrup for a vegan version.
  • Green cardamom powder (optional) – if you are a fan of mango lassi, then add this aromatic spice to recreate the flavors.

How to prep ahead

Chop the fresh and ripe fruits (mangoes and bananas) into small chunks. Transfer the chopped fruits to a freezer-safe zip-lock bag and freeze it. You don’t need to thaw before blending. Transfer the contents to a high-power blender, add liquid, and blend to create a delicious smoothie.

Frequently asked questions

Which kind of mango is best for this smoothie?

For smoothies, use mangoes that are sweet and non-fibrous. For folks in India, Alphonso or Kesar would be a good choice. For those in the US, buy either AtaulfoKent, or Keitt

Can we use store-bought mango pulp for this recipe?

Yes, but I would suggest you get unsweetened mango pulp so that you can control the amount of sugar used in the recipe. One cup of mango pulp should be sufficient for this recipe.

Can I use frozen fruits instead of fresh ones?

Yes! If using a high-power blender, you don’t even need to thaw the fruits before using. Frozen fruits yield a thick and creamy smoothie – you may need to add a little more liquid to get a flowing consistency.

  1. For a super thick smoothie, add 2 bananas instead of one.
  2. Milk can be substituted with Greek yogurt or vanilla yogurt in equal amounts. Increase the amount of honey to combat the tartness of yogurt. If using yogurt, you can also add a dash of orange juice for a dose of vitamin C and flavor.
  3. Other add-ins – For added fiber and protein, sprinkle in chia seeds before blending. You can also add a cup of strawberries or about 1 cup of spinach to make it a delicious green smoothie
  4. For extra creaminess or to make a thick smoothie bowl, use frozen mangoes or bananas instead of fresh fruit.
Author Notes

If you are using frozen mangoes or bananas, a food processor or high-powered blender will yield the best results.
