Now, who doesn’t like Tiramisu, right? Every time I think of this delicate, sweet but not overly sweet dessert, it makes me want to whip one up right away.
What is tiramisu?
An authentic tiramisu would traditionally be made from ladyfingers dipped in coffee and then layered with a mixture of whipped cream, eggs, sugar, mascarpone cheese and sometimes, alcohol. It is then dusted with cocoa powder and served with chocolate shavings.
The only thing that discourages people (pregnant/vegetarians) from having this dessert is that it has raw eggs (most versions of this recipe do!) And that is the reason I skipped my favorite dessert when I was pregnant.
Fun fact: Did you know Tiramisu means pick me up or cheer me up? This coffee flavored Italian dessert sure goes by its name.

What can you use instead of ladyfingers?
While this recipe does not use raw eggs, the ladyfinger cookies do have eggs in them. So if you don’t eat eggs at all, here are some options for you –
- Make eggless ladyfinger cookies at home.
- Substitute ladyfingers with either graham crackers or Marie biscuits. Since they are thinner than ladyfinger cookies, you’ll have to stack three of them to replace one layer of ladyfinger cookies.
